TMJ Disorder (TMD)
What is TMD?
The joint that holds the lower jaw below the skull is known as the temporomandibular joint or TMJ. This joint is located in front of your ear on both sides of your head. When it does not work correctly or causes pain, doctors use the term TMD or Temporomandibular Disorder.
What are the symptoms of TMD?
- Jaw pain
- Difficulty jaw opening: catching, locking or shifting
- Joint noise: clicking, popping, or grinding
- Earache
- Headache
- Neck pain
- Ringing in the ear (Tinnitus)
What are the causes of TMD?
- Jaw injury
- Abnormal habits such as clenching and grinding
- Arthritis involved TMJ such as Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
- Psychological factors such as emotional stress, depression, and anxiety
