What is burning mouth syndrome?

Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is a painful condition often described as a burning, scalding, or tingling feeling in the mouth that may occur every day for months or longer.

 

Diagnosis of primary BMS is based on the exclusion of common secondary causes of BMS including:

  • Dry mouth(xerostomia)
  • Oral candidiasis
  • Nutritional deficiency such as Iron, Zinc, Folate and B12
  • Allergies to food or dental material
  • Endocrine disorders such as diabetes and hypothyroidism
  • Acid reflux
  • Certain medications
  • Psychological factors such as depression, anxiety or stress
