Burning Mouth Pain or Syndrome
What is burning mouth syndrome?
Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is a painful condition often described as a burning, scalding, or tingling feeling in the mouth that may occur every day for months or longer.
Diagnosis of primary BMS is based on the exclusion of common secondary causes of BMS including:
- Dry mouth(xerostomia)
- Oral candidiasis
- Nutritional deficiency such as Iron, Zinc, Folate and B12
- Allergies to food or dental material
- Endocrine disorders such as diabetes and hypothyroidism
- Acid reflux
- Certain medications
- Psychological factors such as depression, anxiety or stress
